Continuing down the road, you can see the Holliwell and Imes bridges to complete half of the bridges of Madison County tour. It took us about 30 minutes to see all three and we met up with I-35 just outside of St. Charles.

Having never seen the movie, but knowing of it and having fielded questions about said bridges, we figured we'd check them out. This one is just outside Winterset (John Wayne's Birthplace!) and is a great stop on your way out of town. Winterset is about 30 minutes from Des Moines and for the opportunity to see something that doesn't exist many other places, this was well worth our drive.

Worth seeing for the history, the beauty and to say you've seen the bridges that inspired a mediocre movie.

A beautiful trip back in time to a whimsical era when they have wooden bridges that were covered!

Remember the Clint Eastwood movie, Bridges of Madison County? A must see!!!!

Was looking for covered bridges in the area and found this one... Turns out it's the one that burnt down that was on the news a few months ago. It is closed and can't be walked on, the main structure still stands but much is gone.

It's beautiful

Roughly 2 miles from the main road and just after the pavement ends, you'll find this picturesque beauty. You can drive your car (assuming it's under 7 feet tall and less than 4 tons) over it and get some great pictures. There are a couple picnic sites and some nice areas for the kiddos to run around flanking either side of the bridge.

It was a very pleasant Sunday afternoon getaway. The bridge is well maintained, but quite basic. It is in a small county park that allows vehicles to drive through it. Very interesting step back in time.
